how do i dial my home voice mail? how do i check messages after that?

You should have been given a number to call when they told you the service was set up.   From the verizon, home voice mail support page:

You use a voice mail system access number to call into your mailbox.

If you did not receive, have lost or forgotten your voice mail system access number, please contact Verizon

If you can't find it in the materials they gave you, try giving them a call.
