old phone works but no cordless will give me a dialtone

Anyone have any ideas?  I can attach an old phone and have no issue but as soon as I plug in a cordless, I get no line.  Even just bought a brand new one and still nothing ~

What type of phone service. Copper old time connection, Fios digital or Verizon VoIP phone service. If you plug in a regular cordless phone into the standard jack, make sure it is fully charged (handset) if VoIP or Fios digital make sure the phone again is charged but your connection should be to the ATA or router device in order to operate.
