Connecting fios router to an additional router

I have a router connected to two computers and two gaming systems in my basement.  I would like to connect my new fios router to this router.  How can I do this

What is the purpose of the Router in the basement ?

If it is no longer supplying Internet to the "two computers and two gaming systems" then all that is needed in the basement is an Ethernet switch be located in the basement with an Ethernet cable connected to a LAN port of the FiOS supplied Router.

Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
