DSL speed

OK so the more I am trying to do streaming video the more disappointed I am. I have DSL by choice/necessity It's a bundle pkg. Bios is not available here in my area. I do not have Bios her Here are my speeds Download 1.53 MBP/s Upload .37 MBP/s The download is on the load side of the chart I think.... Streaming anything HD is slow and a lot of buffering going on. I think I'm at the far end of this DSL line. It was an after though to the sub division I live in. I have lived here for 11 years and the DSL has only been here for 4 years.... That aside what can I do to speed up what I have going on here. I know it's like trying to funnel down 6 lanes of traffic into 2. The Modem I have is from Verizon it's a Westell 6100 and that goes into my router which is a lynksys WRTG54 my streaming Box is hard wired with Cat 6 cable to the router and the router right into the modem. Someone had mentioned a router with "N" may help but My real issue here is the DSL will a different modem help? Or a modem/router all in one combo??? Bottom line is can I improve my speed or is there a faster DSL service available in my area? My zip code is 14086.

About the only way to tell if higher speeds are possible is for you to post your transceiver statistics.

You can get them by loggin into the Westell 6100 as administrator.

Depending upon the line line losses and margins, higher speeds may or may not be possible.

#1 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) will contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from the Westell? Visit http://192.168.1.1/for me and do the following:

1: If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy/Paste the information on that page.

2: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy/Paste the information on that page.

3: Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.

If you need a Username and Password, try the following:

admin/password

admin/password1

admin/admin

admin/admin1

admin/Serial Number.

By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.

I have heard/read that while a RJ-45 WAN port router is setup to use PPPoE but is not connected by PPPoE, as long as both routers (RJ-45 WAN port and modem combo) are in two different subnets you can get in there.

Guess What its only getting worse VZ is going to drop MSN Premium ( No more McAfee or Webroot) now have to pay this was a good deal.  I think I'll be looking into Comcast they get  McAfee free, My friend has Fios and she gets no AV free and its not cheap; although she is happy with the VZ customer support (LOL! She's not computer literate). If I switch to Fios I lose my phone concession and my guaranteed internet price years ago when VZ offered DSL at $14.99/mo with MSN  Premium or Yahoo forever if you made a 2 yr. commitment (this was open to anyone). I signed up for that. It was difficult to find the webpage to sign up for but ater contacting support I found it. Plus I think VZ intentionally slows down the DSL they're trying to sell FIOS, which I don't need at their price/mo. Retired!

Sorry for the delay.

While I know that it is possible to reset the modem combo and then get access to it, I am not sure it matters because one of the hops has "ERX" in its name.

I have tapped on another user, who can help out too.

Heya, fellow Western New Yorker/Buffalonian! 🙂

Sorry about the long delay in reply back. Yeah, it's been known for a few years that Verizon has had plans to drop MSN Premium. Either way, it isn't too bad. The migration to Vanilla Verizon, to Verizon Yahoo, or to a free MSN account shouldn't be too rough whatever you do decide to go with. Anyways, back to the solution for this issue.

We need to see if we can find a way to get those Transceiver Statistics. We only have some pieces of the puzzle at the moment to help us figure out why you're at 1.5Mbps and not at a higher speed. Since the passwords dslr posted up did not work, we'll need to reset the modem to factory defaults to get them.

Disconnect your router from the modem, and connect a PC to your modem. Once this is set and the PC is online only though the modem, press and hold the reset button down on the back of the modem for 30 seconds. When you release the button, give the modem a few minutes to reboot and auto-configure itself. Once the modem appears to have settled down and the Internet light has lit up (after DSL goes solid), visit http://192.168.1.1/ on your PC. The modem will ask you for a new password to set (if it prompts for a password via a browser login window, use admin as the username, password as password). Set the modem's password to something you will remember, in case you need to visit it again. At this point, the modem should be holding an IP address, and indicate that it is fully connected.

From here, this part is *VERY IMPORTANT*. We need to disable the walled garden on the modem. Visit http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm and log in using your username and password combination for the modem. You should then see a page that says "RESTRICTED" and you should also see a Disable button on that page. Click Disable.

From this point, verify you can reach sites such as Google.com and Yahoo.com, and you do not get redirected to a Verizon Setup page. If all goes well, do the following:

Visit http://192.168.1.1/ and click on System Monitoring. From here, choose Advanced Monitors from the left hand side navigation. Click Yes through the prompt, and then choose Transceiver Statistics. Post up the statistics displayed on the Transceiver Statistics page.

From here, you are set to reconnect your router and configure the modem as it was before we reset it.
