I had a Westfall7500 modem which broke.  Verizon replaced it with a different model.  I had to use a filter when I installed it, but the directions with the new one says "do not use a filter."  Will this affect my phone service?

You don't use a filter on the DSL modem.  You use a filter on the phone.
