It sounds like we're not alone but here goes.

We have Verizon Home phone service & DSL. The DSL service has never beenvery fast or very reliable but we don't have any other viable options.

The connection quality has been especially bad for the last few days so I've finally been trying to diagnose the problem. I've done some reading here and have found some really good info.

Some things that I have noticed:

  1. Our phones are NOISY. Lots of background static, even though we are using the supplied "filters". They don't seem to be doing much filtering. There are 3 filters in use but all the phones sound awful, always have.
  2. I checked the connection log and there are a lot of "WanMgr reports DSL is down" message. Every few minutes. This can't be good.

Hope someone can look at this log and let me know if this is "normal" and what can be done to make this servicee more reliable.

Is the static present even with the modem shut off or does it disappear within a few seconds of shutting the modem off? Do you have an alarm system or any other device, besides a phone connected to the phone line? Is the static present when you check at your NID?

The sync-up statistics aren't varying a ton nor are they very bad, so this leads me to believe there is a problem besides a bad line that is causing your disconnect issues. The distance you're at should support a 7.1Mbps line..

The static still seems to be present even when I turn off the DSL modem.

We are in a pretty rural area about 2.5 miles from a large Verizon facility.

The noise on the phone is not new but is simply something that we have had to live with for the 4+ years we've had the service. We don't use the home phone much but we do rely on the DSL.

after writing the complaint the screen went blank and dissapeered.  The only Fix is to not pay $$$ says more than words;  The internet and phone just does not work right,  no one is to blame they just don't know how to fix it. and are afraid to say so.

OK. That's something we should get sorted out then. Even though you live in a rural area, it doesn't mean the service needs to be sub-optimal. You're more than likely coming from a remote DSLAM based on the statistics the modem is reporting, so distance is certainly not a factor.

If you have access to a NID, take a wired phone out to the NID during a time where the static tends to be the worst. Take a DSL filter out with you even though you will not be using the modem. Make sure the modem is offline in the home, and then inside of the Customer Access portion of the NID, locate the test jack under a plastic door. Once you find that, something may be plugged into it. Disconnecting anything plugged into that temporarilly will disconnect your home. Plug your phone into the NID, kill the dial tone and listen for any noise. If you hear noise out at the NID, give Verizon Voice repair a call from a Cell Phone and have them dispatch a tech to solve the issue with the static. When calling, the representive should run a test called the MLT Test, which will check the copper circuit as well as the line card for any problems that would normally cause static or loss of service. It requires the line to not be in use, so be sure no one uses the phone while you call.. If no noise is present outside of the NID, you should strongly consider investigating your home's wiring for any damage, corrosion or otherwise miswire. Once the phone line has gone silent of any noise or static on the jacks inside of your home, the DSL should follow suit and no longer give you issues.

The noise you hear on the line has NOTHING to do with the filters for the phones. Those filters are to remove the DSL signals from the phones themselves.  Else you might hear a high-pitched whine on the phones.

You need to call Verizon and have them come and inspect the noise on your lines.  Those clicks and pops will absolutely ruin the DSL service.

But you SHOULD make sure that the problem is outside your house and not inside. That it why it was suggested that you take a phone out to the Network Interface Device (NID), plug it in and listen for the noise. There are usually two plugs on this box, one for the Verizon (network) side and one for the house side.  If the network side gives you dialtone, press a digit and listen.  It should be silent with no pops or crackles.  Else get VZ to fix it.
