Quantum Gateway - 2.4Ghz goes down, but 5Ghz is fine - post February firmware upgrade

I have a question/observation that I wanted to post to see if I could get feedback on.

I have been using my quantum gateway for the last year with no issues.   After the February firmware update, I noticed that I can now connect to either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.    I decided to put a few of my devices on the 5Ghz to get better speed.   One is a Windows laptop, and the other two are iPhones.

I noticed that since I've done this, my 2.4Ghz periodically goes down - meaning that devices utilizing the 2.4Ghz connection will lose their connection to the gateway.  However, 5Ghz is not affected in any way and remains online beauitifully.   I have to cycle power to the gateway to get connections restored.   As a test, I went ahead and unjoined the 2.4Ghz network when the connection would go down and attempted to re-join.   Re-connections were not successful.  Sometimes it would continually ask me to re-enter the password, other times it would just fail.

The 2.4Ghz channels are set for automatic.   Same thing with the 5Ghz channels.   Interestingly, if i disable 5Ghz on the gateway, my 2.4Ghz connections remain solid and none of my devices ever fall off the network.

Could the 5Ghz radio be causing the 2.4Ghz radio to get drowned out, or could I possibly have a hardware issue with my gateway?

Thanks for any feedback you can provide!

Ah yeah, to be honest is is not a good thing to have the 2.4GHz and 5GHz both named the same in many cases.

It can work no doubt, but there can be times the connection drops because it switched to 5GHz and you were just out of range or on the edge of being out of range and it can cause connectivity issues.

Some devices also don't handle swapping from an a router to an extender very well either, so sometime actively turning your wifi off then on again is a good way to ensure you are getting the best connection where you are in your home.

I actually had issues with the router when the network names were the same when I first got it. The rep I talked on the phone "split" the SSIDs (specifically the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi networks on the router) and all the issues went away for me, so I avoid having them the same name if I can help it.

Note - if I reboot the gateway, 2.4Ghz comes back online fine but then drops out again after 24 hours or so.   That is what led me to disable 5Ghz and find that as long as it's not enabled, 2.4Ghz works beautifully.

The frequencies are too far apart to interfere.

But keeping them automatic is not good either.

If you have an android device, download a free app called wifi analyzer.

It will analyze your wifi and recommend the best channel based on other signals.

Thanks for that.    I'm going to give that a try when I get home this evening.  I have a Nexus tablet that I can run that on to see what the 2.4Ghz looks like.  It could be quite possible that the channels might be getting crowded in my neighborhood and maybe the tipping point was something occuring this month that coincided with the firmware upgrade.

It's just really strange timing that the issue began after I started connecting to the 5Ghz network.  I'll check it out later today and see what I find.  I also have a Mac that has a similar built-in utility - it'll be interesting to see what results I get with two different items.

Ditto...

Quite honestly, after the upgrade I was seeing the same thing. Furthermore, I can't for the life of me underestand what was different after the upgrade. I have had 2 networks 2.4 and 5 since I signed up about a year ago. It switched automatically betwen both as well.

I also run a MOCA extender upstairs to complement the house and I have spent quite some time making it work seamlessly between upstairs/downstairs. What I had to do after the firmware upgrade was to name both the 2.4 and 5 networks the same name on both boxes but switch the frequencies upstairs/downstairs. In my neighborhood channel 11 and 40 and 10 and 44 are rocking.

Sometimes the 2.4 signal crashes however and I have to turn wifi on/off to join again on my iOS devices.

That is quite interesting - I'm glad someone also noticed the same thing.

I'm going to scan the house and see what channels are rocking on the 2.4Ghz - I don't believe my Nexus tablet supports 5Ghz so I might be limited on seeing what could be happening on those bands as well.

Again, it's very odd that when I turn 5Ghz off, I have absolutely zero problems with 2.4Ghz.   However, I know that the router has done both since I got FiOS installed early last year.  I think that hard coding the channels is the next obvious thing for me to do here.

Verizon's in-home agent has a similar utility you can run on your laptop to  show you interfering channels......i'm not sure if it works with quantum equipment but it def works with our rev I Actiontec router.....on channel 6 it showed i had 4 others interfering, so i chose channel 2. It even changed the channel for me...good luck!

Maybe the router's own logs can give you further insight into the problem...

I have exactly the same problem. After 2-10 days the 2.4ghz goes offline and if you try to join it asks for a password but won't accept it. Stay like that until reboot.

I am having the exact same issue. Is there any solution other than disabling the 5G or is there any acknowlegment from Verizon?
