Welcome to the forums.  You're talking to other customers here.

I doubt it will ever be activated for anything more than USB charging.

If you want to have a shared network drive & media server, I suggest you look into a device like the Western Digital MyCloud.  It's a much more robust networked drive than you'll ever get with a router.  It doesn't cost much more than the bare drive inside it.
