Wireless won't access gmail and some other pages

I have a Westell 9100 router with Fios (ultraline series 3) and I just installed a Medialink Wireless N USB adapter on my HP desktop with Windows 7. (The computer is currently located right next to the router but I want to move the computer downstairs if I can get this to work properly). I'm using IE 9 and my connection drops occasionally despite excellent signal strength.

The biggest problem right now is that I cannot get into gmail even after turning off ActiveX filtering.  I can get in if I load basic HTML but that is pretty useless for me.

Any ideas?
