I want to set up a network attached storage for FTP file acces. I'm a bit of a newb on FTP setup, but I can muddle around in my drives firmware well enough to figure out it's configuration.
What I'm not too clear on, are there any tweaks and port settings the Verizon rounter needs to allow outside access to this drive? If so, what are they.

It would help to know at least the brand and model of your router.

Log into your router
select firewall settings
select port forwarding
select new entry
add the destination ip address of the ftp server
under protocols select ftp
select OK
That's the simplistic route. If you really intend to use FTP I would suggest changing your listening port to something other than 21 else you'll have a lot of hacking traffic.
SFTP is a much more secure way of doing it.
