ANY Dvr upgrade pls?
NewFiosUser777

Hello everyone,

I just got FIOS installed on the 12th of this month and actually cancelled my directv service to get it (along with the early termination fee). The HD quality is much better with FIOS though so I was excited! One of the main faults that I very quickly found out is that the DVR I got is apparently a very old one and only has 120gb of storage space and it doesn't even have an e-sata port so I can add an external hard drive. Wow. Is there ANY way I can get ANY updated dvr model that at LEAST has an e-sata port? If I can't, then unfortanetly I'll cancel my service since I'm still within the 30 days and just go back to DirecTv or maybe Comcast. DVR Is a HUGE thing for my family because we are mainly only able to watch our shows on the weekends and we keep the kid's cartoon shows on the dvr so they can watch them anytime. My $200 netbook came with a 300gb at least:-\

I have signed up for that "let me know when an ugraded DVR is available" thing, but I'm not going to wait past my 30 days to cancell without a penalty just to still not have anything. Also, why give a new FIOS customer the oldest equipment you have? Not a good first impression....

From what I've seen on other sites (like DSLReports), what equipment you get depends on the market you are in. I just had FiOS TV re-installed the other day and got three of the new black boxes, but I live in an area that other users also reported receiving this same equipment. You can try calling your local business office, they will probably be able to give you the best answers since this is supposedly a location-based thing.

Hmm, I'll try that right now. Can't they mail boxes out to different locations? Dunno why it would be location based...

Yup, I called one of the stores that was about 30 minutes away and they upgraded me to a dvr with a sata port! Too easy! Dunno why when I called/emailed Verizon directly they couldn't help me one bit. Glad a local office could! They just saved Verizon a customer about to cancel!

we should not even have to contact verizon about upgrading equipment

THEY should be contacting us and upgrading all the equipment, given the level of problems they're having with all the old stuff

calling the local store is an excellent suggestion cause verizon cust serv is simply awful, the worst I've ever encountered in ANY industry!

I agree.  It really is dumb and a waste of time and resources.  It's very short-sighted and doesn't make any sense whatsoever.  I completely blame for Verizon for that, not the customer.  The bottom line is that all of these older 6000 series boxes have got to go to the recycling mill, as another user here suggested.  You can vote on it on the ideas forum.   Just go to Verizon ideas exchange and it's right there.  And by the way, I completely agree that geographical location is irrelevant as far this issue concerned.  That's indeed a ridiculous and illogical answer.

I'm from NJ too and I was definitely fortunate to get the 7100 STB the first time when I got my Fios installed 2 years ago.  Believe me if I had been given the older box and if I could *not* get the replaced, I would have been out the door myself.  It's a very bad first impression, expecting customer to run all of this technology on outdated equipment while charging plenty per month just for the serivce.  It's nervy.  At least there are Fios TV stores where you can make the exchange in person.  At least Verizon has enough sense to do something to resolve the problem as it occurs and keep your business...though I myself would expect a lot more from a company like that.
