On my old Belkin (previous to FioS) router, I had a usb port. I plugged a external drive into this port and it became a shared network storage for all the computers in my house to use. Could you activate the usb port on the FioS router to accomplish the same purpose?

No, the USB on the Verizon routers are internally disabled. It has power, so you could charge your Ipod or something but thats all its good for.
