DVR not extending time on all shows

I have all my series set to extend recording by minutes, HOWEVER this does not actually occur when the episode is recorded. I have tried resetting the box and also deleting and resetting the series. STILL this is happening. Is this a common problem? I don't want to get a new box if it is just going to happen again.
