Correct.  Only the 7000 series have the eSATA port that will allow external storage expansion.

Since you have a 6416, I would suggest trying to do the exchange at a local Verizon store (assuming there is one near you that carries STBs) as reports are that there won't be a charge that way.  Unfortunately, customer service can't deal with specific models for distribution and to assure you get the "latest" model DVR (QIP-7232) you must go through the $40 link Smiley Sad  I really think Verzion needs to re-visit their upgrade policy for 6000 series boxes.
