Save Power, Turn off the STB

I want the STB to turn off so that my TV turns off.  THe STB can change the TV so the input changes to it via HDMI, and the same technology will shut off the TV, but because you won't turn the STB off, it doesn't.  You used to put a message on the screen saying 'Turn off your TV to save power' which was funny, because you're not turning off the STB.  Now you put pictures of movies up and a clock or something when I just want to box to shut off.

I unplug the STB when I'm done with it, but I can't do this with

STB stays on for a variety of issues:

1) If it is a DVR, it has to stay on to be able to record programs.

2) All STBs have to stay on to get routine guide updates.

3) All STBs have to stay on to get software updates.

For 2&3, if they powered down (like you do) there is a delay when you want to watch TV that most customers would find unacceptable.

The newest STBs are energy start compliant.

BTW, turning your TV off doesn't reduce its power usage to 0 either.
