If I have a phone that plugs into a jack and is not wireless, do I really need to replace the backup battery in the FIOS unit?

Backup battery is used to provide phone service in the event your house loses power.

So if you don't care about phone service in that case (many people say they would use their cell phone), then you don't need it.
