Have phoned Verizon customer support on at least four occaisions to get them to send me kit so that I can return my STB. Have only received two small padded envelopes. Not interested in wasting my time holding in a queue on the phone to go through the process again. The only drop off location is not convenient. Dont want to send the STB in a non approved package. Any suggestions?

Try contacting them on twitter @verizonsupport.
What happens if you go online and change your account to drop STB?

You can do a will call on the carrier for pick up at your home.
you need to place the items in a big enough box ( yes it will cost you a few dollars)
and make out the return label to their returns Center and pay for the shipping with tracking and insurance.
Now if you send this route you better have good shipping records and a receipt for the shipment and include insurance. Verizon has a tendency to say they don’t get returns and invoice you for the non receipt. Another issue that may arise is they continue to bill you for non returned (returned) equipment. Google it and read for yourself.
Although you say not convenient think of the alternatives listed above.
possible lost return and get charged.
money out of your pocket to send the units back.
verizon continues to bill you forever.
So in retrospect better to make the effort to get to a physical store to make the return and get a receipt then and there. Also make sure they call in to Verizon to alert them of your return.

Verizon: As you have no easy way to do this, I'm including this here:
You have a typo on your web page:
http://www.verizon.com/home/storelocatorresults/?State=NY
This entry has the wrong zip code:
United Telecom USA Inc.
37-36 82nd Street
Jackson Heights NY 11732
Phone
Hours
(347) 617-1305
Agent hours and services vary by location. Please call to verify.

What are you talking about. That is not Verizon Fios.
look up a Verizon store location via google and go in person. If you have Fios service.

OOPs they have a partner store at that location. Mea culpa.
go in person and return it. Don’t mail it. Then a zip code won’t matter.
