Email I received regarding changing settings by Dec. 2

Hello,

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered, but I'm new and unfamiliar with all the terminology.

I did find this thread, which might apply to me, but I'm not sure: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-net-Email/Problem-with-new-settings-for-Windows-Live-Mail/td-p/...

Anyway, I received an e-mail today saying that I need to change my POP3 settings in my POP3 clients. It said I need to change the settings to SSL in order to continue to use an external mail client. Supposedly if I don't change the settings by Dec. 2, 2013, then I won't be able to use a POP3 client to access and send mail.

This was disturbing, as I need/want to continue to use Thunderbird (and another client called JBMail). I followed the instructions, attempting to change the settings, but they didn't work.

I use Thunderbird for incoming mail and JBMail for sending mail. My current settings are: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net, port 110; and outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net, port 25, use SMTP AUTH

I've used these settings for years and haven't had any trouble except when I've been in a hotel. Then sometimes I've had to use port 587 to send mail.

Now, in the other thread referenced above, a respondent said that new settings don't apply to "yahoo portal email."

However, based on the email I received today, it sounded like I need to change my settings. The e-mail says:

In order to better protect your email and personal information, we are requiring that you update your Verizon Yahoo Mail settings to SSL before December 2, 2013 in all devices that you use to access your email account. Once updated, you will be able to continue to access your accounts through an external mail client (MS Outlook, etc.). If your
settings are not updated before December 2, 2013, you will only be able to access your Mail account from the Verizon
Yahoo portal.

I'm not so worried about receiving mail. I can probably forward mail to, say, a Gmail account, and then download. But I am very concerned about being able to send mail.

I send many emails a day and really need to be able to use a mail client. I intensely dislike web-based email.

I hope this hasn't been confusing. I'm just trying to find out if the letter really applies to me. If it does, then I need to figure out a way to get the new email settings to work.

Thank you for any help!

Could you possibly bypass your router in order to test the theory? Or is it a coax cable setup? If you are using Ethernet it would be easy to bypass the router

Hi Logan8,

Thanks for the reply. I always connect via wireless, but otherwise, yes, there are Ethernet cables. How would I bypass the router?

In any case, to try to solve this problem, I lowered my router's firewall settings to LOW. (Previously they were set to MEDIUM.) Doing this completely solved the problem, and I'm now able to use Thunderbird with ports 995 and 465 and SSL. However, I don't think I'm happy about having the firewall settings at LOW. I'm not really sure if I'm now opening my computer up to threats. The recommended setting was MEDIUM.

Another possible solution was port forwarding, but I haven't read enough about it yet to understand it. I don't want to mess around too much with the router settings and knock myself offline.

I'm also thinking of getting a new modem. According to what I've read, only older modem/routers like mine (Westell 327w) block ports 995 and 465.

It does apply to you. There were two differnet changes. One for just verizon email  users and one for yahoo partners. Yahoo usere are just changing the ports and turning on ssl. non portal email have to change the incoming and outgoing server names.

Thank you for the reply!

Since it does apply to me, do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions on how to get the new settings to work?

EDIT: I've been reading through the threads and see that I'm not the only one having problems getting the settings to work. Does the problem like with Verizon or with my email client? I was thinking the problem was with my software, but now I'm thinking maybe the problem is Verizon's. I live in central New Jersey. If anyone else reading these messages lives near Princeton, NJ, are you able to get the settings to work?

Thanks!

hippls:

I came across your comment, and did what you suggested, i.e. changed my ports to 465 (oit) and 995 (in), and checked SSL.

I was able to received e-mails, but not send them.  The error message I got was :

One morething.  After reviewing some suggestions re this error, I turned off the "Scan outbound mail" on my antivirus.  This did not help.

AFA JBmail I am not familiar, if you could post a screen shot of the configuration page I am sure someone can help with the proper sending configurations

OR please let us know if this is the version you are running http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/jbmail/ ... the setup window does not appear to have SSL as an option ... .

pekoe6 when is the last time you logged into your account at webmail.verizon.net? If you have not signed in online for a long time then that can cause problems. need to make sure you can do that before going through all the other trouble steps because I have seen it many times where everything starts working right after you sign into your online account. Just a thought.

oops sorry you have yahoo. I mean you need to sign into your yahoo portal

I log into my yahoo portal nearly every day to check my spam filter. So, I've regularly accessed my yahoo portal, but thank you for the suggestion.

Pekoe, I use zohomail free version www.zoho.com/mailand have not had any issues with the new settings.

As suggest earlier, please try this link just to rule out a password issue https://mail.verizon.com/webmail/driver?nimlet=showmessages&view=emails

Bearsfolks in your earlier post (the 4th one in this thread, SSL was set to NO - It needs to be set to yes for standard VZ Email.

Jose,

Thank you for the suggestions! I will check out zohomail. I have no problem logging into my accounts via web-based mail. Since I have the Yahoo portal, I generally use this link and just sign in:  https://www.yahoo.com/

However, I clicked on your link and was also able to sign in with no problem.

In another thread, I think, someone said there was a server issue with customers who have the Yahoo portal. That would make sense, but I would hope the issue is being worked on.

The error message I'm getting when trying to send or receive mail using the new ports is: Error: Unable to connect to host.

Hi Jose,

I was just checking out zohomail, and it appears to be web-based, which I don't want. I want to use a desktop email client like Thunderbird. Or is there something I'm not understanding about zohomail?

pekoe6:  Thanks to JOSEm441, I have been able to get LiveMail to workwith the new settings.  It has always had a few quirks (what doesn't!) but all my messages get downloaded to my computer.  I use multiple computers, and I can access the messages (including my hotmail account) onto any of them, as I have all the computers except one to leave the messages on the server.  My main machine is the one which deletes the messages from the server.  The only pain is when you try to transfer folders from one machine to another--it's a bit tedious, and also transferring groups of contacts.

Bearsfolks,

Thank you for your message! Since you are using the Yahoo portal like me, I'm extremely interested in this. It sounds like for you, your just needed to make sure SSL was activated.

I've now tried three different desktop email clients with the new settings and still can't get them to work. I have tried creating a new profile in one email client with no success. I downloaded Postbox (a new program) and set it up -- still no success.

I'm using Win XP SP3. Email clients I have tried are Thunderbird, JBMail (no longer being developed, but I've used it for years), and Postbox. I will try LiveMail to see if that makes a difference, but I doubt it.

I have rebooted my computer after changing settings. I've turned my modem off and back on again after changing settings. I've done everything I can think of with no success.

I've definitely configured things properly according to the instructions.

Thanks for any continued help. I really don't understand why some people can get these settings to work and others can't.

pekoe6:  I'm using Win 7.  I can't remember if I was using LiveMail or Outlook Express (its precursor) when I used XP.

If you decide to use LiveMail, let me know if it would help you if I posted images of each page in the e-mail setup.

Jose,

Thank you for the reply. Perhaps I should have clarified that I'm using JBMail Plus for sending email. It does have SSL. Here is a screenshot. The program is very easy to configure. Note that this setting does NOT work for sending email, nor does port 995 work for receiving it.

I have also tried configuring Thunderbird for both sending and receiving with no luck. I downloaded Postbox last night and tried it, again with the same result -- inability to send and receive mail with the new ports. At this point, I am willing to use any email clients that will actually work with these ports.

Port 587 is for non-ssl.  It is allowed for yahoo using startTLS (communication starts in clear and changes to ssl/tls), but not allowed for the regular Verizon smtp.verizon.net (ssl/tls).

Hi TNS_2,

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I'm aware of that. When trying port 587, I configured the various email clients tried to use STARTTLS. No luck.
