I've received the following e-mail, and my mail program suspects it is a scam. Is It?
Dear Verizon Internet Customer,
At Verizon, we continue our efforts to enhance your online experience as well as ensure ongoing security for our Internet customers. As a result, Verizon Online has modified the way email is handled when sent or received through an email application other than MyVerizon.
If you only use MyVerizon to access your email account, no action is required and you may disregard this email. If you do, however, use other applications to access your Verizon email, such as Outlook Express®, you will need to modify your email settings to take advantage of enhanced security we now offer.
In order to make these modifications, please visit ...//verizon.com/emailsettings for information about the email settings you need to update. Additional information may also be available by going to our online forum at ...://forums.verizon.com/.
Thanks for being a valued Verizon Online customer and we encourage you to act now to ensure your email account has the proper settings on a going-forward basis.
Sincerely,
Verizon Online

I believe this one is not spam. But of course best to not click links but go directly to the web pages telling you how to setup these clients. They are beginning to push out the message that people using these clients should configure with SSL, Something that you really want to do if you ever connect from other then your Home connection anyway.

I received this e-mail also, but only on one of my sub accounts. I did not click any of the links, instead went directly to the Verizon site and went to the section on how to set up your e-mail. The settings there were the same as when i set up Thunderbird eons ago. If they were making a change, all my subaccounts would have received this message as well as the main account. Very peculiar.

It is a valid email from Verizon. If you all would search here before posting, or even just scroll down the list of threads here in the email board, you would see plenty of discussion about this.
Verizon most definitely is suggesting to Verizon email users that they switch to using the SSL ports for incoming and outgoing Verizon email because it will encrypt the email rather than sending and receiving it in the clear. At this point it is not a mandatory change as far as I know, but at some point in the future Verizon could require it.
They are not sending the email to all user email addresses at once, they are sending it in groups. I have multiple Verizon email addresses, and I have received the email on several of them, still not on one. I suspect they are doing this so as to not overload the support group with calls and chats, etc, about this.
I have been using the new ports and SSL encryption for Verizon email for 4 or 5 months now, works fine.
If you had followed the link in the email (I understand, good practice to not click on links in emails) you would find web pages that tell you how to set up the definitions for various email clients. And I really don't see how you could get the old settings from Verizon web pages today, every time I have gone and looked they are the new settings.
Since you mentioned Thunderbird, here is a link to a thread I created here documenting the settings for Thunderbird to use SSL:

I came here first because it was just like some scamming I got about a week ago. I then went there directly from the Verizon site and got the same message from there. But the link does not really work. It says
We're sorry....
We are not able to process your request. To continue, please select
one of the following options:
Now I could just go to my Thunderbird and change to POP3 and SMTP to TLS (or do I select SSL?). But when I looked at MY settings, they are currently
incoming.verizon.net port 110 for POP
outgoing.verizon.net port 587 for SMTP.
Now if I fumble around and get Verizon to tell me my settings, it says the ports are 995 for POP3 and 465 for SMTP.
Do I just elect TLS or SSL? for POP and SMTP and change the port numbers to 995 and 465? If I do that, I will also have to diddle my firewall because it will not let me send to those ports unless I specifically allow it to.
