How do I set individual text tones on the Pixel?

How do I set individual text tones on the Pixel? I did it once, somehow, and can't figure out how to do it again. No obvious menus or options. I can set ringtones for individuals.

If you use the Google Messages application, you have to open the individual message thread and go into the menu and select people & options. Then touch notifications to open the notification options for that contact. From there you can change the tones for that person.
