I have just upgraded my internet to the Quantum Fios 75/35 and want to set up a "wired" network which I have never done before.
Thanks in advance for your help and feel free to explain like I'm 5.

@NetworkNoob wrote:I ... want to set up a "wired" network which I have never done before.
- I want to run CAT6 to 6 rooms
- I plan on adding an external HD as well
- What kind of switch do I need if I even need one?
- What common/uncommon tools will I need?
- Is the type of wall outlet important for max efficiency?
- Any "extras" that a basic home network doesn't need but you would include?
There is an abundance of information and how-to's online. Here are a few for starters:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/

In addition you will find much useful material on DSLReports and AVS Forum. You may also be interested in details of my setup that I've published elsewhere on this forum. Good hunting.

Thanks Armond! This is exactly what I needed. It was hard sifting through all the tutorials on the web and knowing which one applied to me.
