Checking that eSATA drive is being used by DVR

I just finished an amazing chat conversation with FIOS before being so infuriated at the number of circles we went in for a simple question.

I just hooked up a 2TB drive, that I've seen others use with success.  How can I check that the drive is being used/read by the DVR?  There must be a setting somewhere that will say "External Drive" or "External Size" or something just to confirm that it's being used.

Apperciate the help.
