How to use my own dual band wireless N router?

I'm currently using the Westell 9100 router which was set up on the initial install of service.  I would like to use my own dual band wireless N router.  I've read some posts with pretty detailed instructions, but all of the posts were about a year old.  It appears there are many steps involved, and I view each instance of changing an IP address, disabling/enabling various router settings as an opportunity to completely jack up my network.  I just want to make sure I have the most up to date information.  I'd really appreciate any instruction; or maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

My service:

TV: Fios ultimate HD--3 STBs with DVR

Internet: 35/35

Phone: Fios digital voice
