Can anyone help with this question?
When I finally get 1.9 and plug in my eSATA drive will I be still able to view the recordings that were already on the DVR's drive?

I think you may have misread the OP's post (or I am misreading it).
The question was "Can I view what is already on the internal drive?" and the answer is a resounding YES.
Your answer is correct as to whether you can view the externally recorded material on other than the DVR on which it was recorded.
I'm done.

Thanks for your help, good to know that I won't lose existing content. I got the long awaited Verizon e-mail yesterday so now I'm anxiously waiting for the upgrade to take place. I'm tired of using my eSATA drive as a paper weight!
