My dad has been using Verizon dialup for many years but cannot connect today.
He gets a message stating he cant connect to this access number.
There are no other access numbers showing.
He uses (540)432-0816 as well as another one that I dont have and neither are working.
How can we tell if there is a problem with the access number itself?
I hope they are not discontinuing service in his area.

Have you contacted Verizon Tech Support about the issue? This is a peer-to-peer support forum. If you need information from Verizon, you should contact them directly via one of the options on their Contact Us page.
If you dial the access number from the same telephone line, what do you hear from the other end? Does it sound like a modem or do you get a recording? This is probably the best way to troubleshoot the modem connection if you're not able to hear the modem dialing and trying to connect.
Silly question; is DSL not available in the area?
