I am trying to change my wifi name and password, but every time i input my login password, 3 characters appear for a single key stroke and, of course, will not accept password. Help.

Ignore the extra characters. That is a security measure.
The following link will provide instructions on changing your password. For some versions of the Actiontec, the default password will be different than those listed. So check the router label for: "User Name: admin Password: *********".

Ignoring the extra characters and hitting ok still does not let me in.

Make sure you are using the correct username/password combo. If it isn't on the label try the combinations in the above referenced article. They are case sensitive.
You may want to try resetting the router to ensure the default password is currently being used.
If you continue having problems post the router model you have and someone who has that model may be able to provide further assistance.

reset the router to factory defaults by pusing and holding for a few seconds the recessed button on the back of the router
Typically the deafult user is admin
and depending on your router model, the passowrd will be the serial number, whatever password is on the back of the router or you may be prompted for a new password so you can then choose your own. Password are case sensitive, and yes ignore those extra characters.
