How can I stop the slowdown from occuring?
Only way to prevent it is to find what computer or device is triggering the copyright notifications and stop it from transferring the copyrighted content. If you're not aware of any Peer-to-Peer/Torrent software, or "Free Movie/Music" download/streaming apps on any of your devices like Popcorn Time, then make sure your Wi-FI is secure. Also consider changing the Wi-Fi password, and security type to WPA2-PSK AES if it's not already set to that.
If you need to see what devices are connected to your modem/router, visit http://192.168.1.1/. On most of the Verizon issued routers, the username and password will typically be either "admin/admin" or "admin/password" for username and password respectively. On the main page, there is a network map which will show all devices. See if anything is not recognizable.
The slow-down occurs as a part of the Copyright Alert System: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Alert_System
