DSL dropping several times an hour

I went thru this problem in Sept/October 2011 and really not ready to go thru the hassles I went thru then to get it fixed.  But here I go again.  Several times in an hour our service is just lagging and it takes almost 1-2 minutes to load a page.  This has been happening since last week (Jan 9).  I can put up with the lagging in websites but my boys play games via wireless and totally unacceptable for what we pay monthly.  I see cable becoming our internet provider if I can not get this resolved soon.  Can anyone help?

#1 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) will contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

#2 Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

If you don't know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) What is the brand and model of your router?

Did you try connecting the modem to the NID?

I live in an apartment complex so access to an NID is not possible.  I did PM one of the reps in this forum which I think they were able to fix it on their end.

After my PM, I sent her info she was requesting.  The family went out for a few hours and upon our return we had zero internet service.  When I tried to load a web page I was sent to this "Welcome to Verizon High Speed Internet Activation. and had to download activation software, which then configured the modem, initialized then finalized.

Since doing this the internet has been working great with no lagging or dropped service.

Big KUDOS and Thank you to Shamika_VZ @ verizon.  This is the kind of rapid service we should always have.

I hesitate to say this issue is solved until I can go 24 hours with no interruption.

The only question I have is what did this rep do so I can mark it in my notes in case this happens again down the road?

I am glad to hear/read that, but I wonder why that happened.

Does your modem have built in wireless?

If you don't know: What is the brand and model of your modem?

If your modem does not have built in wireless: Does your RJ-45 WAN port router?

If you don't know: What is the brand and model of your RJ-45 WAN port router?

Psst, without downloading any software - I believe addressed on the URL below is what you could of done

Today 1/19/2012 we continue to have dropped service even after the activate service webpage came up yesterday.  Service was great all morning long and most of afternoon - then starting around 4pm I noticed web pages taking longer and longer to load - and game play on the playstation or wii was almost non-existent.  Then around 6:20 tonight we had no service.  I did shut down the Westell 327W modem for almost 2 minutes - including pulling the electric.  When I turned it back on I opened the browser and once again I was asked to Activate Service which downloaded vz_activation.exe .. it went thru the confinguring, initiazling and finalzing once again.

What is happening here?  Do I need to call out verizon to check out the line.  I see amongst these forums I am not the only person having severe lagging over the last week and a half..  Is FIOS better or should I just go with Comcast triple play and save money all around... hmmm..

btw, the dsl modem is a wireless modem but I have it wired to my desktop.  There is no bridge or anything for wireless capabilities -- all thru the modem.

Thanks if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

#1 With the wired computer, try to go to 192.168.1.1

#2 If you need a Username and Password, try the following:

admin/password

admin/password1

admin/admin

admin/admin1

admin/Serial Number.

By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.

#3 In the router go to Wireless Settings OR Wireless Setup OR Configuraton -> Wireless (which ever exist in your router)

#4 Consider showing a screen shot of what you see in there.

http://take-a-screenshot.org/

#5 Since you are at, look for transceiver statistics.

This will tell us what the losses and margins are on your copper pair to the Central Office, which is a good surogate measurement for length of the copper pair. Basically that information will allow us to tell you what speed your line is probably capable of supporting.

1: If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy/Paste the information on that page.

2: Otherwise: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy/Paste the information on that page.

3: Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.

Called verizon and they sent overnight a new modem which they thought for sure was the cause of our dropped service.  Well other than it looking much nicer than one last one it hasn't fixed the problem at all.  We continue to have snail pace service throughout the day.  This can happen a few times an hour.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.  I am so ready to go cable.
