DSL speed not up to par.

I just got Verizon DSL March 15th. I'm supposed to be on the 1.1-3 / 768 (enhanced DSL) plan. It's only running at 1.8 down and 500 up. What do I need to do to find out why it's not running faster. I know that's with the "range", but I may drop back to the .5-1.1 / 364 plan if it won't go any faster. Here are screen shots of the modem stats.

Why isn't the modem showing the sync speed? See if you can get that from the main page or from those same Statistics readings using another Web Browser if it won't display.

The line has plenty of capacity for more speed, 15Mbps if cleaned up enough, 7Mbps for sure being obtainable. I'm going out on a limb to state you're probably suffering from Juniperitus. Once you can get your Sync speeds, go to http://lg.dreamhost.com/ and post up the Reverse Traceroute presented by that website (Remove your IP address from the final hop if it doesn't end in all *'s).

OK, I don't see Juniper in that traceroute from how it normally appears. Looks to be as if you're on Redback. I need your modem's current speed as reported on the DSL Status page or on the main page of the modem to determine where you're at for speed.

Seems for whatever reason your line was set to an "Optimized" provisioning rate. Have Verizon bump your line to 7.1Mbps/768kbps and let's see how it goes.

It's running faster this afternoon. When I first got it set up Thursday March 15 it was only running at 1.5 down and 335 up. Is it normal for this to get faster over time or with use? Some of the stats look worse today. What do you think?

Another question... My house has never had the phone NID installed. The old round can with porcelain fuses is still on the side of the house where the cable comes up from underground. WIll that affect my DSL service? The phone company conractor came here back in the mid 80's and said he saw no need to replace the old round can and fuse setup, as it was in good condition. He left, and never came back. I don't think any phone repair service has ever been out here to the house in all those years since. This was well before Verizon, and may have still been the old C&P phone company.

Those old Gas Tube/Can connectors don't really affect DSL Service a whole lot. If the DSL itself is working just fine I would simply leave it be. I also wouldn't say it is normal for the speed to improve over time, but now that Verizon has an optimization system from ASSIA in use, it is seen as normal now. If it is disabled entirely for your line and a line speed is forced for your connection, you should never see the gradual increase or decrease in speed. It will lock to a speed and remain there.
