Would someone please tell me what these errors mean that are in my log on the modem/router that Verizon supplied me, and how to correct the problems. Especially the Failed retrieving new version, it appears that it is trying to download maybe a updated software version for the router??

You are currect. This is likely due to the fact that the modem isn't finding updated firmware.
What modem are you currently using, and what version of the firmware is installed?
I just switched back over to Verizon a few weeks ago, whatever modem/router it is that they sent me. Here is the information from the System Information screen.

Okay, so a D-Link.
For now, those error messages should be safely ignored, as it looks like the firmware on your gateway is fairly recent. When a new one is available the unit should detect and automatically install the software, or Verizon will remotely install it via CWMP.
