High Im finally getting my own place, but I hit a snag.
It's a studio apartment within a hotel complex so it's a little tighter rules on how much you can modify your living area.
I asked them about if I paid for the installation and fees could I have Highspeed instead of their built in wireless, because I do alot fo stuff that I really would like higher speed for.
So they only had 2 restrictions on this...
1-Cannot put Holes in the wall....I was thinking DSL but am unfimiliar with installion process as I am on 2nd floor of an exposed complex so I didn't know if this is possible or not.
2-My bigger concern...As the phone in the room is a hotel phone...those charges apply when it's in use and can rack up minutes/cash in a hurry which I could not afford 20 hours of phone time at their cost a week...I know DSL uses the phone but technically you could still use/recieve calls on DSL.
Im unsure if this would register with the hotel as me using the line in such a way I owuld be charged for it.
An clarificaiton on this issue would be much appreciated.
Im not in a hard to reach area and am in a quite populated area in case that helps.
I think you are probably out of luck if you cannot put holes in the wall to get a new line installed. You are going to need a copper pair that runs from your 'premises' directly to the Central Office for DSL service.
If the phone in the room is the Hotel Phone, you are almost certainly behind a PBX, and that makes DSL service impossible.
You need to have a copper pair that runs directly from the Central office to your premises for DSL. The frequencies used to propagate the DSL service are outside those used for Voice Communications, so the DSL signal would never get past the PBX, not to mention that the PBX only connects your line to the outside world when you pick up the phone and dial.
So the choices are use the local Wi-Fi, or invest in wireless internet service such as Verizon wireless's 4G LTE service.
Keep in mind that most Wireless Internet service comes with capacity caps, which can be easily exceeded if you do things like stream movies....
Good luck
mattheww's suggestion is probably what you'll be stuck with, unless you can get Hotel management to hook you up with a dedicated line for the sake of Internet access (DSL or otherwise a guaranteed portion of whatever they have coming in, if it's anything more than a T1).
Alright thanks I will probably look into the higher grade Wireless options as the Wifi here is really slow and unstable to say the least.
Thanks for the info.
Pretty much typical of most Hotels. Unless they're a larger hotel or perhaps a hotel that has services such as FiOS available to them, or they use a dedicated Fiber line or perhaps a more expensive Cable modem package to handle the load, most places still use T1 lines or even basic DSL lines. T1s and DSL lines if you were to put me on one would be a guaranteed saturation and massive slow-down right off the bat. Cable lines, they can hold up to a bit of abuse. Fiber lines should stand up very, very well provided they are delivering enough speed.
Anyhow, good luck with everything regarding the wireless service 🙂
