I Don't Know What I'm doing!

Okay my modem model number is 6100. It says on the bottom of it that it's DSL2 + Router. How do I use it as a Router? I want to possibly the net on my Blu-ray Player, PSP.

Also on the back it says USB with a blue piece and the modem came with a blue cord for it. Exactly what is that for?

(Sadly I need to ask that you dumb down the answers while being precise)

These are your choices:

#1 Go get your own RJ-45 WAN port router.

a) Then follow the info at

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600

b) If you have any questions about the FAQ, please ask. When asking, please tell if you are using the White and Blue OR the Red and Black Firmware.

#2 If you do not desire to get your own RJ-45 WAN port and then put their modem combo into bridge mode, then you could get a switch.

Just to clear since I know most routers have a built in switch, you could get a switch that is not part of a router.

a) To make it even easier to setup the switch, you could get an unmanged switch.
Such as the

http://www.staples.com/Linksys-EZXS55W-EtherFast-5-Port-10-100-Switch/product_430473

b) An example of a managed switch is the

http://www.staples.com/Cisco-SRW208-8-port-10-100-Ethernet-Switch-WebViewBR/product_684234

I am not saying that you should be buy their switch from staples OR what switch to buy. Those are only examples, period.

Ok.

a) Go to https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.westell.com/images/pdf/e90_6000_6100_6110_ug.pdf&embed...

b) According to Google Docs, there are 146 pages to that manaul / user's guide

c) Go to page 9 out of 146 pages.

d) Read what is required the two different connection types.

e) You are welcome to read the rest of it, to 27 page.

In that manual / user's guide they are talking about how to configure the White and Blue Firmware.

If you use the Red and Black Firmware, while I know your modem is the Westell 6100, the manual for the Westell 7500 will help.

#1 Go to https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.westell.com/images/extranets/pdf/VersaLink_7500_User_G...

#2 For the Red and Black firmware, since you have the Westell 6100, just skip over all of the hardware info. Unless you are usng Vista and want a USB connection and need to use USB drivers, go directly to page 31 out of 186 pages (otherwise, read page 30).

#3 Also skip all of the wireless screens/settings (from page 52 to page 69).

Are you planning on connecting your Blu-Ray player wirelessly?  If so, the 6100 is not the box you need.  If you want a one box solution, you need a 6100G or a 7500 instead of the 6100.

VZ is supposed to send new DSL customers a wireless DSL router as part of the start up package.  Many VZ DSL customers get a 6100G or a 7500 from VZ.

If they sent you a 6100 instead,  call them up and see if they wont send you something that provides wireless access.
