If I flash my Quantumm Gateway router I got from Fios with a custom-made firmware, will Fios detect that I'm using my "own router", and automatically drop the monthly router rent fee? lol

the answer is no.

However you can use any router you wish and just return the Verizon one.

Good point. A MOCA adapter would or could also be used.

i was more or less amused by the statement “if I flash with my own firmware”

my assumption was the person was internet only. Mea culpa
