Internet Speed

My home internet service has recently become extremely slow.  Prior to December, 2011, I had no problems with internet.  I am trying to find out if there is any particular reason why it should be so slow now.  I pay for the highest speed available in my area and lately am often unable to connect to the internet at all.  When I can get on, it is painfully slow.  We purchased a television and a device to stream the internet through our tv and this has not been possible.  I am extremely frustrated.  Something needs to change or I will have to cancel my service.  I am paying for a service that I am unable to use.  Could it be my router?

#1 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) will contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

#2 Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from you modem?

If you don't know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from your modem:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, what is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

#3 Even if you know how to the Transceiver Statistics from you modem: If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, what is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

I had to ask my husband if he posted this comment because we are having the same trouble.  I have wasted hours on the phone/chat , missed work to have 2 technicians to my house to re-wire and check the outside line and had the modem replaced.  We also replaced our router.  The problem is definitely Verizon and they refuse to fix it meanwhile most time we barely get dial up speed for $40/mo.  I just signed up for comcast cable tonight.  Once it's installed, I'm done with phone and internet with verizon.

Out of curiousity, are you wired or wireless?

Tried both wired and wireless and both have the same slow speed.  My upload is faster than download right now.  Getting on these forums is painful.  I can't wait until Tuesday when we get 20 Mbps for less than what we are paying now.  I don't ever expect top speeds from any company, and maybe the grass isn't greener and comcast will have it's own problems, but it can't be worse than what I have now... can't watch movies, surf the net or work from home.
