Internet in Garage

My phone lines come into the garage (a separate building) and divert to the house and to the room above the garage.  When the lines come into the house they run to a phone system for the house and the lines then run from the system to the jacks in the house.  In other words, the phone lines in the garage are not connected to the phone system for the house.

Our internet line is our fax line.

When I try to hook up the modem to the fax line in the garage, (a) the internet cuts out in the house, and (b) I get no connection through the modem in the garage (the internet line stays red).

Any ideas?

You can only have one DSL modem active on a line at a time. You need to either turn off the modem in the home or run Ethernet to the garage from the modem/router (Westell 6100s can support more than one PC; just use a switch) or use Wireless secured with WPA2 in order to get Internet.
