Moca/Modem help

I have a friend with Fios and a traditional modem/router setup.  Part of the house is getting poor signal/download speeds over wifi and wants to alleviate these problems.  They have an extra router, and extra Arris Surfboard 6141 modem as well.

In the main room that they want to get better wifi, there is a coax wall outlet.  My question is, would it be possible to simply plug in the extra modem/router hardware into the coax, and have a 'second' network?  If the modem will not be helpful, would using the router as a repeater be worth trying to extend the wifi signal?  If that is not possible, would purchasing a Moca router or adapter be required?  Looking for any advice, but I am also trying to avoid purchasing new hardware when at all possible.

Verizon does not use modems in any instance.

if it is a modem/router combo it may be possible to use the router portion as a extender. But I am not familiar with the setup.

you could google “how to set up a router as a repeater/extender with Fios internet.

ohh I did not know that about the modem/router thing.  That makes a bit more sense.

with that in mind, would something like this be able to plug into the coax and extend the signal + allow for them to plug in directly via ethernet?

Like I said I am no expert but if you look at the user manual prior to purchase it may point out how to set up and how to use. I use the following which is easy to set up and even if unplugged you can move it all over the home. https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-range-extenders/EX6100.aspx

I however use a Netgear Nighthawk R8500 Router which paired instantly.

there are other brands out there. But my specs should give you an idea.

What you are trying to accomplish (using the coaxial outlet as a means of extending signal) is definitely possible using MoCA (not cable modems). 

You stated that you wanted to avoid purchasing new hardware but I'll just drop this here for your reference, the fully plug-and-play device: https://www.verizon.com/home/accessories/fios-network-extender/

Optionally, you could go the DIY route and pick up an old Aciontec Verizon router (in photo below on right). Ask around to see if someone you know has a spare one sitting around, or they can be purchased on ebay for cheap ($20-ish). 

Then follow my instructions to make your own DIY network extender using the old Aciontec routers: https://www.justingoetz.net/docs/docs_actiontec/Actiontec_MoCA_Bridge.html (DO NOTE: Change the WiFi settings first before doing anything else on the Aciontec.)
