Need help changing internal IP

Hello, I can't believe it's this complicated.

I need to change the Verizon DSL Westel router's LAN/network IP and the DHCP range it hands out.

The problem is, I need to log on remotely to client's firewalls/servers using VPN. I can log on ok, but when I open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1 it opens the Verizon router here at home instead of the clients firewall.

I tried changing the Admin Panel> Advanced>Private LAN settings to 192.168.5.1 with a DHCP range of .21-.46 and I got locked out. Couldn't log back into the router at all. I had to factory reset the brick and reactivate my DSL service.

Any ideas on such a simple task?

You are so close to it.

Tip #1: After you change the LAN IP of the router, if your computer is set to use DHCP: you must release and renew the IP.

As how to do that, will depend on the OS and version.

To save time, I will assume you are on Windows XP.

Go to Start -> Run.

Type in cmd and press enter.

In the new window, called the command prompt, type in....

ipconfig /release to release the IP Address.

ipconfig /renew to renew the IP Address.

Tip #2: Then you must enter in the new IP Address of the router to connect to it.

Tip #3: If your computer is set to use a static IP..

.. then you need to change the LAN IP and Default Gateway on your computer to reflect the new settings.
