I have a day old DSL setup. The internet connection light on the modem is erratic. A number of timed I have to reboot the modem in acquire a network connection. I leave the modem on as instructed in the start up book.
Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up. It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
The internet disconnecting has seemed to be correcting itsself.
The responses I got were written in "high computerize". I have worked in the electronics industry for 50 years and could not follow the logic behind the answers.
Thanks anyway fo the effort,

#1 Trace route shows the fastest possible route between two host.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute
#2 Transceiver Statistics shows how strong/weak the signal down the wire is.
Sort of like wireless, even if I am not connected to that wireless network - I can see how strong/weak the wireless signal is.
#3 As far as modem:
a) that is what you use since you are on DSL.
b) OR if you want to, you can answer this question: What is the network layout?
---
#1 If you are not sure of the network layout, start of by physically finding the equipment..
This was my network layout what it used to look like.
a) A phone wire and a power wire from a wall jack goes to a power surge protector
b) A phone wire and a power wire from the power surge protector goes to my Westell-F90-610015-06
c) An Ethernet wire from Westell-F90-610015-06 goes to my Linksys E4200's RJ-45 WAN/Internet/To Modem Port.
d) All of my computers are either connected to the Linksys E4200 by wire or by wireless.
#2 If not sure of what kind of cable is (or cables are) used, just tell what you know about the layout.
