Not getting internet speed I should.

Everything's been fine and what have you but just today I am not getting the speed I should. Websites are loading a lot slower.  I should be downloading at around 350kb a second but today it is only around 50. What's up? I have the High Speed Internet Extra plan.

There are two reasons for low speed. One is the speed of your link from your premises to the Central Office (CO), so please post your transceiver statistics, and we can see what the connection speed to the CO is.

The 2nd issue, and more common, is network congestion inside or outside of Verizon's network. Irene has caused some significant issues with at least some servers in the North East, so if your web sites are hosted in the North East, or your traffic is routed via the NE, you are likely to see some loss in effective speed until things return to more or less normal.

Your connection to the central Office is fine, in fact you may be able to get even faster service then you currently have based upon the loss and margin figures from your transceiver statistics. You apparently have 3mbps/768kbps service.

So if you are unable to get 350kbytes/sec on the download, the issue is upstream of the Verizon Central Office. That may be due to network congestion, or temporary issues associated with Irene. You might want to run the speed test from Argonne National Laboratory ndt.anl.gov, and pay particular attention to statistics and more details tabs in the report, as they can often shed light on exactly what the problem is.

Keep in mind that Verizon simply provides the on/off ramps to the Internet for your use. They have little control over the speeds you get once you leave the Verizon supplied part of the network.

I am getting about 30kb/s speeds. That is LESS than what the cheapest DSL plan should be getting.

His line should have no issue with 10Mbps given his current statistics. Plenty of headroom on it to push it that high.

@Mcfilly: Open up Command Prompt either by launching it from "Run" in the start menu by entering in "cmd" or by searching for "cmd" in your Start Menu, and enter in the following command:

tracert www.google.com

Press Enter

This will perform a traceroute, which should give us an idea of where the issue with slow speed is occurring. In addition, please visit this website ( http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html ) and post up the results of the Reverse Traceroute that site gives. On the Reverse Traceroute, if it doesn't end in all Stars and reports a failure, the final hop will be your connection. Remove any mention of your IP address from that name and final hop.

To paste up the results of the Traceroute, right click the Command Prompt window and choose Edit, and then choose Select All. From there, press Enter to copy the data and paste the results into a forum post here.
