Got a strange one here.... Downloaded WIFIFoFum to my iphone and have recently? begun seeing an advertised mac with no SSID emanating (based on rssi signal strength) from my Fios Router westell 9100. The internal radio is turned off on the westell9100 (drops were ugly), so I installed a separate Cisco Linksys N+ for wireless functionality. I see that net fine, and it works fine, but still see this odd strong wireless signal coming from the westell (RSSI of -4 with iphone next to westell router). The mac is not the same mac as the westell 9100... mac is 00:21:63:xx:xx:xx. I see a similar mac with a low signal (probably somewhere in neighborhood). That mac lists as askey? Any idea where/what this ghost signal is? It shows no SSID and no security. Am concerned about security of home network with this apparently local spurious non secure signal. Fios support just said it was not coming from local router because it has no ssid and does not match router or wireless radio mac... help! PS, the ghost signal goes away when I power down westell 9100.

@ITNerd wrote:Thanx Via, Yes see that.... Rev D? Did you try Power on/off after turning radio off? When did you install/receive your router?
Got the router early November but don't think that means anything as the neighbour got an Actiontec in late Deecember.
haven't tried powering router off and on to see if signal appears. Will do later this evening after the guy who is downloading several dvd's off my ftp server is finished - he appears to be using a very slow connection at his end.

I have a very bad feeling about it.
As example of a router where the is a problem.

The user turns off the wireless in the router, but the router still has wireless turned on behind their backs with another SSID and with no security!

aren't there two mac address's with every router out there, maybe this is mac address number 2? that security flaw is out of control though, so that may be an issue, but I thought I would point out that these routers should have two mac addresses, a wan side and a lan side mac address.

that mac address belongs to the following
Search results for "00:21:63" Prefix Vendor 002163 ASKEY COMPUTER CORP
you may want to do a google search and see what askey computer is, it sounds like a generic network card/router manufacturer.
hows your sevurity on the cisco/linksys. ?

Did you try powering off the router and seeing if the signal disappears?

I understand that, I don't think he is getting the westell signal I think he's getting a different signal all together from a neighbor or something. that mac address he is picking up isn't his westell. so he should be able to rest assured it's not coming from there.
I would think at least. that mac address is definetly askey if you look it up.

I did look it up and came up with Askey. Then I went to the askey site and looked companies they make wifi routers for and Westell wasn't one of them - that's why I suggested he power the router off and see if the signal disappears.
I'm not sure how to determine the MAC address on my Westell, do you have any idea how it's done?

under system monitoring, it shows the mac and it should also be printed by the wep key.

He does say in the last line of his post that the signal goes away when he powers off the westel.

Looked up mine on my westell Broadband connection 002397 - Westell
Wireless 802.11g 0024d2 - Askey
So I guess turning off the wireless doesn't turn off the signal just the station details, wonder if there is a way to connect to that.
I don't use the wireless on my Westell as I have a dir-655 11n wireless router inside so I'll turn mine off and see what happens.
