We are switching from a pc to a mac , do I need to replace our existing modem with a different one?

No, you don't need to get a new DSL modem.
If this is on Dial-up (not DSL), maybe you do. You will have to if it is a Win Modem...

If you're using DSL, just bring the Mac home and connect the Ethernet cable to the back of the Mac. Nothing else is needed (no software, no activation, no new modem).
