Ugraded Fios from 10/2 to 25/25. I'm only getting 6-15Mbs on VZ speed test. Huh??

Before the upgrade, I was consistently getting very close to 10/2 average every time on the speed test, which is what my data plan was.

Tests range from single digits to around 15 tops but never consisitently high. Before, I was always getting what I paid for.

Now with 25/25 upgrade, I just get 15 average download. That's not the only problem, my upload is averagin HIGHER at 18! Would the wireless N router help? I see Verizon offers one but it is $115.

Anything I can do? I don't know if this old VZ router supports N signal. Is an upgrade worth it? I see there are N upgraders on Amazon for just $40. I'm just on 25Mbps, under 54mbps, so I don't know if it will boost my speed in other ways.

Also, is a lan wired connection much faster than a wireless one? Even if the wireless is interference free? I've already tried changing thru all channels in the router diagnostics.

If necessary I'll buy a 30 ft cable to run to my pc if it means true 25mbps.

It's so frustrating I can't even break 20.I was excited with anticipation of up to 150% speed bump but just a 50% bump...?

I don't want high upload speeds. Why not 35/15 option VZ? 25/25 is strange.

Thanks in advance. Good day!

Your post suggest you are using Wireless rather than a hardwired ethernet connection. You will always get the highest speeds with wired connections.

While 802.11g is in theory capable of 54mbps, your don't live in an anechoic chamber. Real world performance is considerable lower. The reality in the real world is that on a good day you might be able to get to 20mbps. In addition on some adapters, the receive window is not configurable, and that size and number of receive buffers can also impact performance. So you are already running quite close the realistic performance limits for 802.11g.

It is unlikely your Actiontec can be upgraded to 802.11n, the firmware in it is unique to Verizon in order to support FiOS television.

Verizon is now supplying Actiontec routers with wireless N capability to top tier customers, and there are reports in these forums of some new customers receiveing 802.11n capable equipment. While you can buy a new router with 802.11n from Verizon, it is generally a lot less expensive to simply buy 802.11n wireless access point, and connect that to your existing router to get wireless N service.

Would an 802.11n wireless access point be affective enough that I wouldn't need to consider hardwiring an ethernet cable? I ask because I don't want to string an ethernet cable across the house even though it would obviously get the best speed.

If I can get 20Mbps+ on wireless I'll be happy and cable free.
