Unable to connect HP Officejet 6500a Plus to Verizon router

Just inherited an HP Officejet 6500a Plus wireless printer, but it won't connect wirelessly to my Verizon router. Any insight on what compatibility issuea might be causing this. Tried WPS -- no joy. Tried Guest SSID -- didn't work. Turned off 5G, still not working. What else can I try?

Keep 5Ghz on but turn off SON. Make sure your 2.4Ghz wireless radio is set to Compatibility mode, and is using WPA2-PSK wireless security.

Above all, a wired ethernet connection is recommended for any fixed devices, e.g. desktop computers, printers, NVRs, NAS, and etc.

Did you turn off IPv6 compatibility on both of your printer and router?

Contrary to what the other reply you received, a wireless printer is just that WIRELESS

when you have such an issue it best to go to the manufacturers web site and download the most up to date driver for the printer.

sometimes the firmware on the printer is at its end. In this case it will not connect as it should and you just need a newer printer.

with today’s wireless tablet and phones etc. that rely on wireless printing hooking it up via USB is pointless after the initial setup.

printers are cheap today so buy an up to date one.

That looks like an old printer.  Reviewing the specs I found online, I see it is 802.11n only for WiFi and has an Ethernet port.  I see no mention of 5Ghz, so it's likely a single band device.  If you can connect it to Ethernet, that would be best.

If you must use WiFi, know that updating a driver on your computer won't help with simply connecting to the router.  A driver update will help when it's time to actually print, but this is a entirely an issue between the router and the printer.

You didn't mention which router you have, however some Verizon routers have an 802.11 mode setting that can cause older devices to fail to connect.   On the G1100, it's on the "Wireless Settings->Advanced Security Settings" page.  Check out "802.11b/g/n/ac mode" is set.

this is a wireless printer and not that old. But the router must be backwards compatible in order to connect to the 2.4 Ghz

On a printer (if designed for wireless connection) running the set up driver’s cd or from the manufacturers web site via download the set up program DOES use one of two connections for your printer. If the person selects wireless then it will INDEED look for the SSID to connect to. Then it will function wireless as it should.

if it has a problem finding that wifi connection it will insist on using a usb printer cabling connected to your computer. Once it completes it should work wireless as it tells you to remove the usb cable.

however this would not work with very old printers.
