Verizon caching "Unable to find website" even after VPN is turned on to enable access

I sometimes forget to enable VPN before accessing my work website. One would think that after I fail to load the site once and turn on VPN, I should be able to access the site immediately.

With Fios it doesn't work properly. After the initial failed access takes me to a link like this:

http://searchassist.verizon.com/main?ParticipantID=X&FailedURI=http%3A%2F%2Fmy.workwebsite.com%2F&Fa...

I'm stuck redirecting here for 5-10 minutes even after enabling VPN.

Anybody know how to make this work immediately after enabling VPN like it should? Is there some Fios configuration setting that can poke something upstream into not caching this?

Thanks,

Ganesh

It sounds to me like when you connect to the website prior to opening your VPN, you get a DNS result that is cached  locally on your computer.

You could fix this on a per instance basis by opening the command prompt and enter ipconfig /flushdns

Fix it more permanently by changing DNS server settings.

Verizion's instructions for opting out of DNS assistance are here:

https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/home-network/settings/opt-out-of-dns-assist

Their instructions are a little bare bones.

if you're using a non-verizon provided router (ie one you own), google for changing dns on that specific model router.    This is somewhat of an advanced thing.  I managed to screw it up myself while changing to opendns over the weekend.
