I got my grandson a kindle fire hd for christmas and i have it on my wifi but what do i need to do or get to get it to work when we are not at home

Is this a Kindle with Cellular Internet support? If it's Wi-Fi only, you'll need to connect up the Kindle Fire to a nearby Wi-Fi network while on the go. Otherwise, you're stuck with what the device has stored in memory, so it is often times smart to download books and music from your connection before taking the Kindle on a trip, should you wind up at a place without Wi-Fi.

Now if it's cellular, you may need to ask Amazon about this one.
