What causes a phone call on DSL to Disconnect Windows Remote Web Workplace?

We had Comcast cable HS Internet service before Verizon, with IDT VoiceLine VoIP phone service.  Did not have Internet browsing or connection issues when simultaneously making or receiving telephone calls with any web site or web based application including Windows Remote Web Workplace from our PC running Windows 7 Pro.

Since switching to Verizon DSL phone and HS Internet service, my wife can no longer effectively work remotely connected to her company's Windows Business Server and Remote Web Workplace.  She can connect and work fine as long as the home phone is not in use.

As soon as an outbound or inbound call is connected to our home phone, the Windows RWW drops the connection.  Other Internet resources remain available - only RWW is affected.

Find something big to download on a fast server and then bring up the Task Manager's networking tab (or another tab) to view. Then pick up the phone and/or dial a number. Does your transfer stall for a few moments or completely? Does the Internet or DSL light on the line continue to blink or start to blink when this happens? When you hang on the phone, does the transfer start back up or does it continue to remain stalled?

It sounds like the line is seeing errors for some reason when the phone is in use. Could be from a bad half ringer, a short or just a marginally running line to begin with. Could also be from shoddy filters or a filter installed backwards too.

This could be caused by a telephone handset plugged into a wall jack without one of those little in-line filters in between.

Are you sure that all your handsets are isolated by filters?

All the phones have filters. Also, a few minutes ago I just realized I lost my connection after answering an inbound call - and it was to MSN and Hotmail.  Other apps on my desktop also complained the Internet connection was lost.

I don't get it.  I was on the phone with VZN tech support one morning and was surfing the web without any trouble.  I don't know why the connection is dropping at all with active phone calls.

Two points:

First as other have pointed out, make sure there are DSL filters on all devices connected to the telephone line except the DSL Modem/Router. That means fax machines, Sat TV, Alarm Systems etc that are connected to the telephone line, not just handsets. When in doubt, as Verizon about a 'whole house' filter. This is a DSL filter at the NID, and a separate dedicated wire from the NID to the DSL modem/router. That insures that all devices except the DSL modem/router are behind a filter. This also reduces the DSL signal losses in the home wiring.

Two please post your transceiver statistics. Filter are not 100%, even with filters in place, there is some 'leakage'. If your DSL service s marginal to begin with, even minor additional losses or interference could take you 'over the edge'.

I am a simple man...hence I just love simple solutions.

You folks are great!  One of the three filters installed in the house was backwards...and it happens to be the one closest to the PC which would explain why sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't (depended on the phone that was used and since all but one are cordless it was pretty much a crap-shoot which one we would grab).

I'm sending this reply while simultaneously signed in to Remote Web Workplace and web e-mail...and talking with Verizon business support about another account issue.

Thanks again for the responses and for solving this little self-induced issue.

Glad to hear it's all fixed up 🙂 . If anything too, your line will probably have a bit more room for noise too now that the filter being put in backwards isn't adding attenuation. Just a little fun fact!
