can't login to router....

i just got verizon fios the other week and am having a problem logging in to the router

i got to 198.168.1.1 (basic router thing) whatever

it shows me the username and password which is fine i know it all

but when it comes down to me entering in the password i hit 1 button and its like 

Ex.

Username: Admin

Password:

than i hit 1 button for the password real quick and it still automatically pops out 3 or more of the letter

Username: Admin

Password: PPP (does it for every key more than once and i don't know what to do)

anyone.... ideas??

192.168.1.1 i mean, you know what i mean the basic router login site....

The bit with variable number of dots per letter is actually a silly security measure meant to confuse someone looking over your shoulder from figuring out the length of your password.
