I notice that the firewall is turned off in my verizon router/modem. It came this way. Should this be so? I have Norton internet security running on my pc but is the router exposed to evildoers? Should both be running?
IF you have the Westell 6100For 7500 the default setting is Firewall off. So If you press the reset button I would recommend turning it on, I personally use the Max. Setting. Interesting that I just went to FIOS and now the default setting is firewall on.
Just be aware if you use anything besides e-mail and web such as VPNs or games that require the use of non-web ports and protocols, you'll find that setting the modem firewall to higher levels of security will often result in the breakage of those programs. There's nothing wrong with enabling the built-in firewall on the modem, but certainly keep that in mind when you turn it on. My modem is bridged and as such, the Firewall is turned off but I do have a "special" setup at home with the network itself as to how firewalling operates in addition to NAT, since I also do have IPv6 support.
