how do I increase router signal strength

I got a new laptop and it does not get wireless signal where I use my older laptop. Is there a way to increase the router distance to increase signal. My older laptop works just fine where I would like the new laptop to have access.

I have had success with a long range USB adapter such as AlFA  AWUS036H for about $25. All that is required is to plug into the USB port and a quick setup.  A 5dB antenna is included.  In my situation I was several rooms away on an outside porch and went from 1 bar to 5 using this device.  An internet search should find many options.
