internet dropping packets on way to/from server

I've been having trouble for about 6 months with my connection to www.tc2000.com. The problem is with screen refresh. For example, when I click for a pop-up menu, the menu won't appear in its entirety until I run the mouse over where it's supposed to be. And, when click to go from one workspace to another, part of the screen is not properly replaced. To get the screen right, I have to minimize then restore the window, so that the screen is redrawn.

I've contacted the folks at tc2000, and we looked at potential firewall issues. But, the problems persist even with the firewall turned off.

Next test was to do a route trace with the following result:

Tracing route to www.tc2000.com [64.239.246.185] over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  Wireless_Broadband_Router.home [192.168.1.1]
  2     9 ms     6 ms     6 ms  lo0-100.WASHDC-VFTTP-315.verizon-gni.net [71.127.46.1]
  3    10 ms     8 ms    13 ms  B3315.WASHDC-LCR-22.verizon-gni.net [130.81.223.130]
  4     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  6     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  7    10 ms     9 ms     8 ms  4.68.72.17
  8    18 ms    16 ms    16 ms  rdu1-ar4-xe-2-0-0-0.us.twtelecom.net [66.192.245.238]
  9    19 ms    19 ms    19 ms  66-194-117-2.static.twtelecom.net [66.194.117.2]
 10    23 ms    23 ms    21 ms  te2-5.dist01.ral.peak10.net [66.129.104.102]
 11    18 ms    18 ms    19 ms  64.239.246.185
Trace complete.

As they noted, "it looks like there may be an issue with your connection to our servers (As shown by the asterisks in hops 4, 5, and 6) The trace is completing and you are reaching our servers but you may be dropping packets on the way there which is causing your degraded performance. Unfortunately since this issue in not occuring on your ISP network (Verizon) or on our network there isn't much that can be done to resolve this."

But there must be something that can be done to fix this. Why can't Verizon come to the rescue??

A traceroute showing non-responsive hops like Hops 4, 5, and 6 is generally normal in networks.

Here's a good example I just came up with of a route that is otherwise fine, but would show a problematic hop. Level3 is known to do ICMP de-prioritization on their network. My ISP, Charter Cable, is also known to do the same thing on their network.

Tracing route to b.resolvers.Level3.net [4.2.2.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 2 ms 2 ms 3 ms router.smithlinemon.mooo.com [192.168.1.1]
  2 52 ms 40 ms 24 ms 142.254.216.197
  3 26 ms 33 ms 34 ms agg63.ntnwny1702h.northeast.rr.com [24.58.216.93]
  4 14 ms 12 ms 12 ms agg37.lncsnycd02r.northeast.rr.com [24.58.38.106]
  5 27 ms 23 ms 16 ms be29.rochnyei01r.northeast.rr.com [24.58.32.62]
  6 33 ms 32 ms 29 ms bu-ether25.chcgildt87w-bcr00.tbone.rr.com [107.14.19.28]
  7 47 ms 37 ms 35 ms bu-ether11.chctilwc00w-bcr00.tbone.rr.com [66.109.6.21]
  8 * * 2061 ms lag-82.ear2.Chicago2.Level3.net [4.68.72.197]
  9 30 ms 29 ms 28 ms b.resolvers.Level3.net [4.2.2.2]

Trace complete.

There would be less variance and jitter in my trace if I weren't using a Wi-Fi connection at the moment.

Try checking with the support team for the application to see if the program makes calls to other web addresses/IP Addresses. Most applications are designed to point to places other than the website's main address.

Your total ping is 19ms, which is very good.  So the time outs are inconsenquential.  What you also monitor is your total internet speed use freeware Bitmeter 2.  Also alot depends upon traffic thru the different nodes.  Routing nodes in high density areas such as major cities with high business internet use during business hours (such as NYC) will also affect your internet speeds.  It appears that some of the nodes in your route are thru Washington D.C. and that would explain alot
